I've been a member of this fine organization since 1998; in 2007 I was voted in as a Juried Member (their professional artist catagory). The AAWS Gallery and exhibition space is one of the most beautiful in the downtown area - a "must see" when in the area.

Where do you get your Ivory?
I purchase my antique ivory piano keys from companies that repair and restore pianos; the pianos sometimes can't be renovated, and these companies recycle the keys as well as other parts. I like the thought that my scrimshaw keeps these keys out of the landfill!
As to the pre-ban Ivory I use, it is legally purchased from my friend David Warther in Sugarcreek, Ohio. See the link below for additional information. I also use Mammoth, and Mastodon which are not an endangered species, as they are booth extinct. Other legal forms of Ivory include Walrus, Warthog, Hippo and Sperm Whale teeth (legal for intrastate trade only). Ivory can be defined as the dentine substance of any mammal.

Gallery of the Arts
Gallery of the Arts held their grand opening on October 17, 2009, in one of the most beautifully renovated downtown buildings in Winston-Salem. Jim Tedder, Paul Penta, and knowledgable staff will welcome you to a handsome, well-lit space, where art of every type is presented.
